Background :

PoE switch ( Power over Ethernet switch ) was invented around 1999.

PoE switch was designed to run various remote IP devices by providing them both power and IP data link, so that they can operate without need of external power.

Later in 2003 , IEEE laid down the specifications for the PoE switch ~ IEEE 802.3af

Thereafter , it's wide usage started for running many different devices.

It was designed as a generic product to run several type of IP devices which need very low to a certain level of power.

Example of devices it can run :

IP cameras , IP phones , IP sensors , IP controlled relays , IP Access Points , IP Speakers and many other standalone devices.

Facts and Problems of PoE switches :

In a standard PoE switch . . .

Facts :

• It can run 1 camera on 1 port.
• Can run camera upto 100 mtr maximum.

( But practically it can run max upto 60-70 mtr only )

Problems :

Moreover , PoE switches cause these problems in IP cameras :

• Resolution Loss in all nearby cameras ~ which causes poor to very poor performance by all cameras.
• Resolution Loss & Frame Loss in cameras at distance ~ poor performance and Lag in videos of cameras even at 40-50 mtr away.

Still , for last more than 20 years , PoE switches are being used to run IP cameras worldwide.
